Bulgaria
Georgi Izmirliev Secondary School is located in a small town in the centre of northern Bulgaria only 7 km away from Veliko Tarnovo, a town with a big historical importance, and 300 km from the capital Sofia.
The school is one of the best schools in the area. It is renovated and has a lot of modern equipment. We have almost 900 pupils in the three levels- primary (grades 1-4), junior high (grades 5-7), and high (grades 8-12). All the students have classes in the morning. The pupils from primary classes can stay atschool in the afternoon in special groups to prepare their lessons for the next day.
The students from all grades are offered to take part in different clubs and workshops according to their interests: ‘Healthy eating’, ‘Art and recycling’, drama classes, folklore dances and traditions, traditional weaving, as well as sports clubs. After grade 7th students choose to continue their studies in Languages (English –Spanish) or Science (Biology-Chemistry). In both classes they have in-depth IT courses. About 90 percent of our pupils continue their education at University, some of them even in other European countries.
There is also a school psychologist and a nurse. Our school has a sport field, a swimming pool, a Science and a Phonetic laboratories and a cafeteria. We have about twenty students with special educational needs at different ages. They attend ordinary classes and are helped by support teachers. They usually do very well at their studies and many of them succeed to pass the state examinations at the end of high school. They haven’t been involved in any European projects about SEN students that would meet their needs and help their social integration until now.
